stories beneath my feet
By saving a highlights folder on instagram, one extends the life of fragile images that live for 24 by giving them special meaning and awe. By framing the photos in a printed zine, I gave them even more meaning, playing with the idea of owning an image. As Susan Sontag writes in her essay On photography, "to photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed. It means putting oneself into a certain relation to the world that feels like knowledge — and, therefore, like power." Since social media is a big part of our lives, we use the posts on our accounts as something we own and take full credit for.
The photos in this zine were all taken with a smartphone during an occasional slip of the eye. Zine has a format 9:16 as Instagram stories do. The round hole in the cover imitates the form of a highlight's folder cover picture.
